Free Backgrounds

To Christy
By David Garlinger

You told me not to drink and drive,
not to give into peer pressure;
So I sat there all night
giving the drunks a lecture.
I told them what you said,
not to drink and drive.
They told me to shut up
if I wanted to stay alive.

As the night passed me by,
I almost started to cry.
They were all having so much fun
drinking and getting high.
I wanted to belong,
not to be a loner,
so I gave into peer pressure
and became a drunken stoner.

I had to get home fast
to wait for your call.
I walked to my car,
and damn near started to fall.
"Was I too drunk to drive?"
Will I be kept alive?

The results are very real.
I now know what you meant.
I didn't think it would happen to me,
My blood all over the pavement.

A man stands before me
with sorrow in his eyes.
He told the other medics,
"Help this boy before he dies."
They tried to save my life,
but the docs were just too late.
They could do nothing else
but learn from my own fate.
