The Cross
By David Fields
(Contact: dfie5l@charter.com)

Around my neck is a cross
Of ivory and red twine
To help me feel much closer to thee
During a very trying time

And today we travel a dusty trail
Past the Hoc Mon Bridge to Cu Chi
But soon the monsoon rains will veil
Every native soul and me

Now I can't help note that only I
Wear this "token of esteem"
And I have to wonder should I die
Will Heaven turn out just a dream

But whenever I pass a Buddha Bust
Or see a Shinto Shrine
I'm reminded that our God is just
Though a life he gave for mine

So on we trod to Nui Ba Dinh
The Black Virgin Mountain of fame
Reassured that a life that's full of sin
Can be redeemed through his Holy Name.
